Sanctuary in the Cove - Coopers Beach

Sanctuary in the Cove is not just one holiday home but two.  Cove Cottage and Pohutukawa Cottage are located right on the waters edge.  They are more than 100 metres apart, separated by bush and large trees.

Location
Sanctuary in the Cove at  Coopers Beach, Northland, is just over an hours drive north of the Bay of Islands in winterless Doubtless Bay.  Travel time, if driving from Auckland is 4 hours.  There are also regular flights to Kerikeri/Bay of Islands and Kaitaia (both approximately 45 minutes from Coopers Beach), from Auckland with Air New Zealand.

The Owners

Sanctuary in the Cove is owned and managed by Bruce Abraham, a New Zealander who returned to live in the Far North, after 20 years in business overseas.  Bruce has developed the property extensively since first purchasing it in 2002.  This has included the planting of 2000 trees and the planting program continues.  Bruce is assisted by his partner, Rebecca Shawyer, a local clay-sculptor. Guests interested in art, are treated to a private showing at Rebecca's studio."

The property

The 3 acre property has a 120 metre water frontage and landscaped grounds/gardens featuring many large 300 year old Pohutukawa and Totara trees.  Entrance to Sanctuary in the Cove is through an electronically controlled security gateway and down a 250 metre driveway, opening to a private cove.

Cottage accommodation is limited to two couples (in each cottage) and  is fully self-contained and self-serviced.  Guests at Sanctuary in the Cove are able to enjoy a totally independent stay in seclusion and privacy.  No children are allowed.

This formula provides for a romantic and intimate holiday, well away from the hustle and bustle of a busy city life and other people.

The Cottages:
Each cottage has two queen bed bedrooms, a laundry and large bathroom with spa-bath.  The layout has been designed to maximise views of the absolute waterfront settings.  Three of the four bedrooms, have stunning views of the private cove, Doubtless Bay and beyond to the open Pacific Ocean.

Furnishings are modern and comfortable, with gas BBQ's and outdoor furniture catering for the warmer summer months.  The entertainment systems include SKY TV, DVD/VCR, CD/Stereo.  A selection of DVD's and CD's is provided in each cottage as well as a mixture of light reading material and indoor games for those rainy days inside.

Eating out  - Our Favourite

Bruce and Rebecca don’t hesitate to recommend Coopers Café  (157 State Highway 10
Coopers Beach. Phone 09 406 0860)  for a la carte fine dining – this is our favourite – you will not be disappointed!

Time to Relax

The cottages face north to north-west and therefore enjoy full all day sun.  In the evenings, guests can relax on their front private verandas watching the sunset and the fish jumping in the constant movement of the tide.  The property is also home to a vast variety of bird-life with tuis particularly prevalent.  Wild ducks, pheasants, quail, blue herons, pukehoe and rabbits are also constant visitors and can be watched in the mornings and evenings as they feed along the shoreline or wander across the front lawns.

Out & About
Coopers Beach and Mangonui, is within 5 minutes drive.  There are a mix of retail businesses and a number of restaurants and waterfront cafes.

Other facilities available to guests include: kayaks and boogie boards, dinghy's with fishing gear, mountain bikes, 3/4 size snooker/pool table and the option for hosted 1/2 day fishing charters.

Bruce and Rebecca welcome you to come relax and enjoy a secluded break away at the beautiful Coopers Beach.
