Ruby Cottage - Cable Bay ...

Ruby Cottage is in Cable Bay in the Far North District of the North Island.  (4 hours drive from Auckland, 2 hours drive from Whangarei and 50 minute drive from Kerikeri)

Tamar Hurwitz was captivated by Ruby Cottage the first time she saw it  ‘I loved that it was an authentic kiwi bach on a large piece of land with a beautiful garden.  That, plus the stunning bay views and the proximity to the beach, made it the perfect choice’

Cable Bay is close enough to larger towns to be convenient, yet far enough away from it all to provide a relaxing vacation. Plus, the Far North enjoys some of the finest weather in New Zealand!

Seasonal highlights

Ruby Cottage offers a truly classic kiwi bach experience all year round.  Situated on a lush and sprawling private garden, Ruby Cottage provides stunning views of Doubtless Bay and is the perfect Far North getaway.

Built in the 1950’s, Ruby Cottage is a classic kiwi bach with all the mod-cons, that is decorated with unique mid-century style and delightful kiwiana curios from yesteryear.

Nearby activities include: swimming, children’s playground, exploring rockpools, surfing, biking, diving, fishing, boat excursions, swimming with the dolphins, kayaking, kite and wind surfing, horse riding, golfing, wine and food tasting, arts and crafts, paintball and walking/hiking.

Exploring

The Far North is a lovely area with many sites to see by car or bus, including: Cape Reinga, 90 mile beach, wineries on the Kari Kari peninsula, the ancient Kauri Forest with the majestic “Tane Mahuta” tree, and nearby Mangonui, Kerikeri, and Bay of Islands.

Best Swimming?

The best spot for swimming is a 3-minute walk away at the coral pink beach of Cable Bay, where you can also explore the nearby rockpools, and collect beautiful seashells from the sand. Good fishing can be found in Mangonui where many boats go out from the harbor, as well as excursions to swim with the dolphins.

Eating out

Nearby Mangonui provides a variety of dining options.  Most notable is the “world famous” Fish-n-Chips shop. The Cable Bay store just down the road from Ruby Cottage (with the big ice cream cone out front) is where you can get groceries, takeaway, and ice cream. The Coopers Beach Café is also nearby.

Don’t miss a visit to?

The Butler Point Whaling Museum and 1840’s House in nearby Hihi is a must-see! Visit this heritage site to learn about local whaling history, and take a tour of the old Butler Point home that is still beautifully furnished in period furniture from the 1800’s.  Stroll through the sprawling grounds afterwards and bring a picnic to enjoy.

Fondest Memory?

Tamar’s fondest memory of being at Ruby Cottage was this past February.  A friend was visiting and they brought home a variety of fruit trees (feijoa, avocado, mandarin, lemon, tamarillo, fig and paw-paw) that were planted in the garden so future guests could enjoy organic fruit, fresh from the tree.

“After all the gardening, we’d sit outside with a drink and enjoy the summer sunset while gazing out at the bay.  It is the simple, good living—in harmony with the beautiful surroundings—that I enjoy most at Ruby Cottage”

Rainy dayz
Ruby Cottage provides a wonderful collection of movies, music, games and books that are perfect to enjoy on a rainy day.  Explore the vintage book collection (for both adults and kids!) and “go back in time” while sipping a cup of hot tea in the upstairs lounge.  Nearby museums also provide an interesting rainy day activity, including the Far North Regional Museum in Kaitaia, and Matthews Vintage Collection where you can see vintage cars and machinery dating as far back as the 1900’s.
