A Cottage with History...
Blackmore Cottage was built in 1855 as the home for the customs officer Edward Blackmore and his family. Unfortunately Mr Blackmore was very good at collecting the customs duties but had great trouble passing on the money collected to the Government. He was forced to leave New Zealand and became one of the early examples of the brain drain to Australia. He went on to establish a school in Sydney and taught the first two prime ministers of Australia but failed miserably to make his fame and fortune. His house however has been beautifully restored and most guests use the term "simply stunning". We bought this cottage because it was in a very sad state and we wanted to save some of Nelson's history. Blackmore Cottage is set in a historic precinct - the whole street has a heritage listing. It is so handy to town for shopping, conferences, sports events at Trafalgar Park or the Trafalgar Centre and to Nelson's famous Saturday market
The cottage features two downstairs bedrooms (a twin and a double) and a large attic bedroom with two more single beds. Guests love the old fashioned high beds, the antique furnishings and the attention to detail. The kitchen is modern with all mod cons and the bathroom is very large and also contains a complete laundry. A huge vegetable garden at the back of the cottage is for full use of guests. Blackmore Cottage is fully insulated, it is cosy and warm in winter and delightfully cool in summer.
Out & About The cottage is within walking distance to town (a good flat walk). Bikes and helmets are supplied for those more adventurous. It is one minute's walk to the nearest coffee shop and two minutes away from the best fish and chip shop in Nelson. The cottage is also walking distance to a number of excellent waterfront restaurants. One minute's walk to the bus stop for travel to Abel Tasman National Park. Six minutes from Wearable Arts Museum and two minutes drive to the centre of Nelson.
