The Boatshed (IOB – Isles of the Blessed) Russell is on Te Wahapu peninsula with wonderful views across Orongo Bay to Russell Point and Matauwhi Bay. The Boatshed offers peaceful, easy living family accommodation with access to a host of activities.
Location
The property Set on an acre of land fringed by native bush that slopes down to a small secluded bay, the property has wonderful panoramic sea views of the Paihia Channel and Kororareka and Orongo Bays. The Boatshed is a self contained unit adjacent to the main house. The property’s gardens offer seclusion and are visited by fantails and tuis by day with moreporks at night.
Access to the bay which is lovely for high tide swimming is by a track through the bush. At low tide, a wonderful tidal walk across the rocky shore around the bays to the boat ramp at end of Te Wahapu road can be enjoyed. |
Separate and screened from the main house, The Boatshed offers accommodation for four to six people. Built in 1996 the open plan kitchen / living area opens onto to a large screened deck. The bathroom and laundry are on the same level while the two main bedrooms and third mezzanine bedroom are on the upper level. Décor is modern and easy care with furnishings to match. A gas barbecue and outdoor table are on the deck for holiday catering while a TV and DVD player are in the living area. A full kitchen complete with microwave, fridge/freezer means that self service is easy. Parking for car and boat are available and on arrangement, boats can be moored in the bay below.
Things to Do: Swimming and fishing are the most popular activities on hot, sunny days. Golfers can visit the Waitangi Golf Club renown for its distracting vistas of the Bay of Islands. When the weather is cooler the area offers a range of activities from Russell shops, art galleries, cafes and restaurants, trips across the bay to Paihia, to visiting the Treaty House at Waitangi.
Exploring the Bay of Islands - Out and About Wide ranging and varied throughout the year the area hosts a number of events. Fullers Ferries day trips out around the bay are world famous with dolphin watching to fast trips to The Hole in the Rock and island visits available.

Famous for its fishing, an extensive range of trips are available locally and can be booked in Russell on arrival. However, game fishing trips need to be booked well in advance.
The Coastal Classic yacht race from Auckland to Russell is the main event for Labour weekend and combined with the Russell Art and Craft show, there is something for everyone. Kerikeri hosts the Kerikeri Half Marathon and Bay of Islands P&I show (A & P show) in November. A spectular sight in early January, the Tall Ships race run by the Russell Boat Club is another event that draws people nationally and internationally. The Bay of Islands Sailing Week at the end of January is well supported by sailing enthusiasts from far and wide. The latest information on local activities is kept in The Boatshed.
Eating In or Out Many visitors chose to use The Boatshed’s facilities and self cater. There are two Four Square superettes in Russell that offer a wide range of groceries, fresh fruit and vegetables. Orongo Bay Oysters are open most days during the summer season and offer superb oysters, a must for oyster lovers. And of course, eating your own freshly caught fish is a Kiwi holiday tradition.
Two minutes drive away is Omata Vineyard which includes a very good restaurant while Russell has several cafes, takeaways and numerous restaurants. The Duke of Marlborough hotel on the waterfront is the oldest hotel in New Zealand.
