Awatere, Waikaia, Northern Southland

Waikaia is a popular holiday village nestled in a lush green farming valley at the base of the Garvie and Umbrella Mountain Ranges. Awatere is the name of the expansive sheep and beef hill property where the cottage is situated only 8 km out of Waikaia. Denise, James and family invite you to come and enjoy the tranquil environment with views up to tussock bush clad hills.

What made us build this holiday home?

We both have travelled and get great enjoyment in being able to give something back, by offering people the opportunity to get off the beaten track to come unwind and enjoy this unique part of New Zealand. Just on our property we have 2 great fishing streams, native beech forest where occasionally wild deer can be seen, a road up to 2500 ft with amazing views of the surrounding areas. Our farm tracks are great for mountain biking plus we have the historic King Solomon Gold mine site on this property.

Positive Experiences from Renting to others

Most of our visitors are from overseas and it is very satisfying to get positive feed back from satisfied guests, who seem to enjoy the remoteness and the peace on our farm. Some of the recent comments include: "We thought we lived in Paradise USA, but your cottage is a paradise. We loved the animals and loved to fish your great waters", "What a treat to stay in such a beautiful place".
We also have a modern property in Arrowtown and often guests use both, so both properties seem to compliment each other.

Favourite pastimes at the Bach

Fishing the renowned willow lined Waikaia River, taking a walk on one of the numerous DOC native bush tracks at Piano Flat, kayaking, hunting, mountain biking spending time with the family at the river, or just relaxing on the veranda with a great book and a long G & T, and passing the time of day.

Area attractions

Waikaia has a lot to offer with in the township itself, but its main attraction is a base for the numerous outdoor activities the main one being fishing. It is also within an easy drive to numerous other attractions including The Eastern Southland Gallery in Gore which has the John Money Wing as well as the Ralph Houtere Collection, The Croydon Vintage Aircraft Company at Mandeville with pre booked scenic flights available in a Tiger moth, easy day trips to Catlins with its world famous fossilised forest, Te Anau with daily trips to explore the Fiords and the features within the National Park, Central Otago - the fruit bowl of NZ, and Queenstown.

Within the Southland area there are often events and festivities through out the year one of our favourites being the Bluff Seafood Festival a day filled with trying seafood delicacies, and great entertainment.

Best time of year to holiday

In the warmer months as this is an outdoor lovers paradise, and the winter can occasionally get a little bit damp!, but being a new, warm, well appointed cottage people are welcome anytime.

2 large cane chairs to sit out on the veranda and enjoy the surroundings.
A good house designer - also a keen fisherman.
