Taupo, North Island.
Kuratau House is a delightful family holiday home that is now being enjoyed by a third generation of the Atkinson family. We asked Elise Atkinson to tell us what makes Kuratau so special
Distances
What are some of the seasonal highlights? Summer: Swimming in the lake and river, taking the dinghy up the river, water skiing, reading in the sun. Going "up the lake" in the boat to isolated bays. Kayak hire is available just around the corner from the house, horse trekking between Tokaanu and Turangi. Winter: Skiing at Whakapapa. Mulled wine when we get back. Hot mineral pools on the way back to Kuratau. The fact that the place is quiet in winter... Less people! Autumn and Spring - Very few people about!!! Walking around the lake and seeing no one!!! FABULOUS!!!! Refreshing cold and returning after a walk to the warm house for a hot chocolate. And the quails are back!!! Running about the section and through the bush (now all of the people have gone!!!)
The History of Kuratau House It was built for our family by a family friend who lived at Kuratau about 35 years ago...... The roads had only gone in a short time before. I can remember us all traipsing through the bush looking at our "section" and where the road was going to go. The house is built of timber and with timber inside walls similar to the Lockwood style. |
We arrived one Christmas holiday and the house was all finished and the Norris family (Dave Norris was the builder) were all there to see us arrive with a huge "Welcome" sign attached to the house!!! The beginning of many years of fun and anticipating our summer holidays with huge excitement!
Out & About
Go across the river and into truly native bush. The birdsong will transport you back to your childhood. We used to occasionally see deer coming down to the river on the other side. If you want to go further afield within a one hour drive there are trout farms. Mount Tongariro National park and all that it. The army museum at Waioruru, scenic cycle rides within the national park. 4 wheel drive quad bike riding at National Park village plus paint ball and "test drive" buggies and more Turangi is central to all
the outdoor activities in the region.
Best spot near the Bach for Fishing....
the river mouth is a popular anglers spot as is "the spit" (TeRae
Point) or trawling in the lake. No one is going to tell you their
favourite fishing spot, however or the lures they use. Finding
your own secrets is part of the Kuratau "culture"! |
Eating out:
Rainy Days On rainy days you can sit inside and read, although a walk around the lake with a big umbrella is an amazing thing. The rain bouncing off the surface of the lake is simply beautiful. Swimming in the lake is also a fun thing to do in the rain (if its summer and not cold!) and will take you back in your mind to doing things just a little bit crazy However if it is cold and raining head to the hot mineral pools at Tokaanu where you can relax in your own private pool. If you would like to book this bach or find out more, you can view the listing here.
