What made you get a holiday home?

We have always enjoyed holidaying in different locations and Melissa has a family history of having a bach on the West Coast of the South Island. We lived on the West Coast for some 6 1/2 years. When the family bach was sold there was always the wish to try to replace it. An opportunity presented itself and we went to Northern Buller to have a look around Mokonui, Karamea and Little Wanganui. These were all areas we had never visited before. We were struck by the unspoilt scenery and the slower pace of life. We were fortunate to find a nice 5 bedroom A frame in Little Wanganui and bought it there and then.

Favourite purchase for the house?

Visitors Book - because it gives us the enjoyment of reading about other peoples holidays in Little Wanganui and Karamea area.

Favourite holiday pastimes at the bach?

Reading, walking along the river, bonfires at the beach, exploring Oparara arches, caves and lakes, walking, fishing, kayaking, hunting, whitebaiting and generally relaxing.

Must sees at Little Wanganui?

We'd say you'd have to make sure you build a bonfire on the beach and toast some marshmallows. It's great to be able to do the 'traditional' things without regulations getting in the way. But also must see Oparara arches, Mirror Tarn, Oparara caves, Kohaihai (start of the Heaphy Track), Lake Hanlon, Scotts beach, start of the Wangapeka track, general bush walks, Little Wanganui Whitebaiters Ball, Little Wanganui Beach Day.

Best season to holdiay?

Anytime is great. Ideally whitebait season if the whitebait are running!!!

A bit about yourselves?

We originate from Christchurch where we went to school together. We now live in sunny Nelson and have a daughter who is in her second year at university and a son in his last year at high school. Melissa is a Registered Nurse and Trevor is an Area Manager. We enjoy entertaining and spending time with friends and family. We enjoy walks, swimming and getting away from the busier life on holiday. Both actively involved in Annesbrook Church in Nelson.

Best spot at the bach?

Having a quiet cup of tea or Gin and Tonic on the upstairs balcony looking over the river and beach, or being on the beach with a bonfire going.

Favourite books for the bach?

We have a well stocked book shelf and magazine rack! Jim Henderson is a favourite of ours.
