Ohope Beach is a 10 minute drive from the historic Bay of Plenty coastal town Whakatane. This holiday home is at the West End of Ohope beach near the headland, on a private right of way, with direct access to the beach from it's large section. What made you get a holiday home? "The Bach", as it is affectionately known, was purchased by our extended family in 1982 and since then our three families have shared it for their holidays. We discovered at the time of purchase, our grandmother (Mabel Jane) owned the section in the 1930's, which has made it a very special place for us. Our parents had also retired to Ohope after enjoying many family holidays there, so we were able to continue this family holiday tradition. Favourite holiday pastimes? Swimming, rock pools with the children, long walks/runs on Ohope's 11kms of beach, golf, trips to areas of interest in the Bay of Plenty, walks to Otarawairere Bay, chilling out, long lazy lunches - followed by long lazy BBQ dinners interspersed with swims, boules, beach cricket, siestas, and fishing with the children off the end of Ohiwa Wharf. |
Must sees? Musts are a visit to Volcanic White Island, Kohi walk offering great views of the Rangitaiki plains and Pacific Ocean, swimming with the dolphins, Whakatane Heads to watch the fishing boats cross the bar, Mt Tarawera, and fresh fish & chips dining on the deck over the water at the Ohiwa Wharf restaurant enjoying the sunset and sundowners. Best season to holiday? This is an all year round holiday spot with each season offering its special charm and visitors who stay in the summer frequently return for a winter break.
A bit about yourselves? Although we grew up in the Wellington area and all went to school there, our family is from the Bay of Plenty and still farms in the Taneatua area. We have holidayed in Whakatane and Ohope since 1945. The great great grandchildren of Mabel Jane are now holidaying at Ohope and "the beach" is a favourite spot for a new generation. |
Positive experiences from renting to others? Our visitors have also come from US, UK, and Sweden and it has been fun getting to know them via email while they are planning their New Zealand holidays. It is also a joy to get the feedback from families about their Ohope holiday experience at "The Bach" - a quote "thank you for sharing your piece of paradise".
Best spot at the bach? Lying in bed listening to the sound of the sea at the end of a long hot summer's day and waking in the morning to the tuis. Relaxing under the sun umbrella enjoying a long lazy lunch. On the upper terrace armed with a good book and sun lounger and any other necessary comforts required for a relaxing chill out. Enjoying a glass (or two) of red wine in front of a roaring fire in winter. Most memorable holiday? The most memorable holiday in recent years was New Year 1999/2000 when three generations of the extended family saw in the new Millennium together rekindling memories of many fantastic holidays together - having the bunkhouse for the additional accommodation was a blessing!
