Penzance Bay,
Penzance Bay is in Tennyson Inlet, in from Maud Island. Pristine bush, part of the Marlborough Sounds Maritime Park; breath taking scenic grandeur, bird life, weka, quail, and much more... How to get there? Turn off to French Pass, past the Rai Valley - one and half hours from Nelson, Blenheim and Picton, accessible by car or boat. Oh for a holiday home... but where? Darcy and Nancy are both passionate about boating and fishing, and five years ago they formulated a shopping list for a seaside holiday home. First came location and that started with looking at Taupo, then east coast beaches from Napier to Ngawi and then west coast beaches up to Turakina. By chance we ended up at Penzance Bay at the conclusion of a weekend of exploration in the Marlborough Sounds.
There it all was...

And there was the house... Aptly called Fisher cottage, proudly looking over Tuna Bay with 10 steps off the back lawn down to a concrete jetty. Affectionately known as "Dobbie's Bach" from the original owners, one could tell this bach has always been loved. We fell in love with it instantly and knew it had just been waiting for us to come along.
Together we worked on the project of converting this bach into an all seasons 'home away from home' with all the luxuries but endeavouring at the same time to retain that Kiwi 'bach' feeling... Our Improvements Every year we have a wish list to improve the house and last year it was a fully tiled refurbished 'Cleopatra' bathroom. This year we are putting new single beds in one of the four bedrooms Food Our favourite locally gathered feast has to be the blue cod and scallops, fresh from the sea sizzling on the BBQ - awesome!

Where do our guests come from? We have had guests from all over NZ, England, Holland, Italy, South Africa, Canada and USA - no Australians yet! Things to do Some use the dinghy we supply for their exclusive use, some walk, swim, fish from the dinghy, fish from the shore, hire a kayak, play badminton and games on the nearby reserve. Many just soak up the sun, the peace and quiet, read a book or just blob out, relax and have some real family time. Many people bring their own boats with adequate parking on our flat drive. It fulfilled our 'shopping list' in every aspect and we wanted to share this special gift and the experiences of our guests have mirrored that of our own. When I arrive at Penzance there is always a feeling of immense peace and tranquillity - like I "stepped off the planet". I just love to sit on the deck and listen to the birds, the water lapping against the jetty experience the silence... The boating here is fantastic we often have dolphins swimming alongside and there are seals and we even saw an orca in the outer Sound this summer!
We feed wekas on our large deck and watch the growing population of quail, the babies like bouncing bumble bees; and waking to the song of the bellbird and to tui. At present we are packing up on the farm, time to retire and move close to our Little Piece of Paradise but these days we have to book our holidays too! If you would like to book this bach or find out more, you can view the listing here. |
