Tutukaka Poor Knights Divestay, Northland.

Tutukaka is a small township, 30 km from Whangarei or an hour's drive from the airport at Whangarei. If you are driving up from Auckland, allow 2.5 hours to get there.

Jill & Martin are from the UK and first came here in 2003 on holiday. They fell in love New Zealand so much they moved here in 2005. Jill reflects... "I feel privileged to live and work in such a fantastic place".
Jill and Martin have set up two holiday homes that they rent out. "Poor Knights Divestay" and "Bach 33".

Why buy a holiday house here?

Jill and Martin loved the unique combination of beach and bush, the great climate and simply that Tutukaka is a small and friendly place.

An Exciting New Venture...

Martin comes from an aquarist background, and diving has been a natural progression for Martin. He has a passion for marine life. Jill has a background in office management and administration. This year they began Poor Knights Divers. www.pkdive.co.nz is a dive charter boat owned and managed by Jill & Martin. The Dive Boat operates from Tutukaka Marina to the Poor Knights Islands.

"We had our 11 metre power catamaran built from scratch! Its difficult to believe that this time last year, it was no more than a drawing and now we have been operating successfully for 4 months".

Why holiday in Tutukaka?

This is the winterless north! For the adventurous you can dive all year round and in the summer there is kayaking, surfing and endless days at the beach.

Big Fish...

This is THE spot for fishing - coastal and big game fishing abound! Some of the world records for game fish are held at Tutukaka. Tutukaka holds the world record for the largest Striped Marlin caught (224.1kg) and Thresher Shark (363.8kg) Other gamefish in these waters include Mako Shark, Yellowfin Tuna and Kingfish.

Out & About

There's always plenty to do in and around Tutukaka. Diving is what the area is best know for, but you can also try surfing, kayaking, fishing or horse riding to name just a few! Or take a visit to the Zion Wildlife Gardens, a tranquil countryside retreat near Whangarei and home to television's Lionman - Craig Busch. The park-like environment provides a sanctuary to some of the world's rarest big cats - and allows you a unique chance to learn about these magnificent endangered animals.

Wanting More Info?....

www.discovertutukaka.co.nz is a great site with a wealth of information if you are visiting this area.

Our Favourites...

Jill loves to walk on the beach or in the bush and really enjoys the lovely countryside. Take a trip to the Mermaid Pools or the Soda Fountain.

Eating out...

Try a meal at Schnappa Rock. It has a great laid back beachy feel + the food is good!

You have got to go to...

The Poor Knights Islands! A marine reserve and one of the worlds top dive sites. This place is worth a visit even if you don't dive, you can snorkel or sightsee and visit the world's biggest sea cave.

"Great Diving, Great Drop Offs Great Visibility!!"

Rainy dayz in Tutukaka?

Take the opportunity to rest and put your feet up at the bach. The bach is set up with Sky TV, PS2, games, books and magazines. When you have had enough of inside activities - try a visit to Whangarei and check out the shops, cinema or the museum.

Jill and Martin invite you to Tutukaka... come and see what made them stay.
