Lake Taupo and Taupo township has blossomed in recent years. It has always been a favourite holiday place for the curious triplicity of trout fishing, hot mineral spas and snow sports, but latterly has become known for a complete smorgasbord of outdoor pursuits including skydiving, rafting, mountain biking (that’s real mountains!) and waterskiing to name but a few. And Central North Island holiday homes and houses, in addition to endearing little cribs and cottages, now include some very gracious and luxurious houses.
In the north eastern corner of the region are the famous Waitomo Caves with guided walks or boat trips that take you through the wondrous glow-worm caves with the added option of black-water rafting and abseiling. Further south towards Tongariro National Park, the scenery becomes more mountainous with a wealth of sub-alpine and alpine hiking opportunities in the summer. Luxuriate in the hot mineral spas at Tokaanu, or Taupo before heading back to any of the Central North Island holiday homes & houses.
The area still remains famous for trout fishing around Turangi, and Tongariro and snow sports at Whakapapa and Turoa skifields, but if you have the time there are some excellent golf courses, hiking in the Kaimanawa Forest Park (take your fishing rod) or a visit to the Wairakei Geothermal area where they’re using the excess heat to grow orchids and fresh water prawns. Or, simply sit lakeside and sip a glass of après-ski wine at one of the Central North Island holiday homes & houses, after all, you are on holiday.
