Coromandel Peninsular was a hive of activity in the 1800’s when gold fever struck and there are many special sites to visit where battery stampers pounded out the yellow metal not long after the kauri trees were felled for their marvellous wood. The Thames School of Mines and the Thames Historical Museum have amazing displays of old mining and logging paraphernalia.
Even today, probably on the beach outside any of the Coromandel baches, you might find other gems such as pieces of jasper, agate, onyx, petrified wood and chalcedony.
There are plenty of roadside picnic spots and forest walks in the Coromandel Forest Park in the Kaueranga Valley but the main attraction is the fabulous beaches especially around Whitianga and the Mercury Islands where the sand comes in a choice of colours; yellow, white, black and pink fringed by fiery red blooms on magnificent pohutukawa trees.
Take your fishing rod, because even if you haven’t the sea-legs for a chartered fishing trip for big game fishing, you can at least drop your line off the beach outside most of our listed Coromandel Accommodation.
Popular beaches include Hahei, Cooks, Onemana, and Pauanui with Whangamata especially popular at Christmas and New Year. Don’t miss Hot Water Beach where you can scoop out a pool in the sand and create your own spa – which has to be a very natural way of enjoying any of the Coromandel holiday homes for rent.
