Reminding everyone of the volcanic nature of New Zealand’s prehistory, Mt Taranaki at 2518 metres dominates the horizon with its almost symmetrical appearance and when glazed with snow, makes a majestic backdrop to this dairying area and home to New Zealand’s gas and oil fields. Egmont National Park has some brilliant walks to explore in the summer with some fascinating sub alpine fauna. It’s also a snow sport Mecca in the winter. Climb to the top and you’ll see why Taranaki holiday homes and houses offer such a special retreat.

Taranaki is perhaps most well known for its magnificent gardens, especially Pukekura Park and Brook Park in the city and Pukeiti, Tupare, Holland Garden and Truby King Dell further out. The rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias are particularly stunning. For a slightly more agricultural feel, some of the Taranaki holiday homes and houses are located on, or near, sheep and cattle farms offering another form of pastoral relaxation.

The beaches on the northern side of New Plymouth, (the only city and commercial hub) have a unique, isolated sense of tranquillity and the chance to try your hand at the patient art of whitebait fishing. To enrich your general knowledge, try a visit to the methanol plant, Methanex NZ Ltd or the Dairyland Visitor Centre at Hawera where Fonterra, the company which produces about 90% of New Zealand’s milk products has a large processing facility.
