Christchurch, with its symmetrical street layout, has a reputation for being more English than most English towns and this is beautifully illustrated by the serene Avon River that runs through it, the magnificent public gardens and some private gardens which are open to the public. The neo-gothic architecture lends further ambience to the English feeling but is balanced by fascinating attractions such as The International Antarctic Centre, hot-air ballooning, the breathtaking Christchurch Gondola and the fast-paced Christchurch Casino.

Over the Port Hills which rise above Christchurch to the southeast is Banks Peninsula, a favourite holiday destination for many New Zealanders with a convoluted coastline dotted with interesting bays and coves. Akaroa is the principal town, the nearest thing in New Zealand to a French settlement. Here you can spend your days away from any of the nearby Canterbury holiday homes & houses enjoying coffee and cakes at quaint cafes along the waterfront.

To the west, as the Southern Alps rise majestically to the sky, is a vast winter playground for skiing and snowboarding from Tekapo Skifield in the south through to Temple Basin, Mount Hutt, Craigieburn and Mount Lyford in the north. From Mount Lyford it’s a short drive to Hanmer Springs, a thermal reserve area offering a rather hedonistic pleasure of lounging in a hot mineral spa pool with snow layered thickly round about. There are many Canterbury holiday homes & houses close to the ski fields and not too far from the National parks for hiking and camping.
