Within the region is the famous McKenzie Country, an elevated plateau of grassland which, in its heyday carried 40,000 sheep. Further south into Central Otago are some of the best ski fields in New Zealand with a myriad of other outdoor activities on offer including, river rafting, horse trekking, jet boating, mountain climbing and the now famous, bungee jumping. The area is known for growing apricots, peaches and plums but is steadily gaining a reputation for first class wineries producing some of the country’s best red wines, most especially pinot noir. Queenstown, the hub of tourism activity in the region, is well represented by many Southern Lakes/Otago/Southland holiday homes & houses.

The largest city in the area is Dunedin with its concentration of impressive Victorian and Edwardian architecture. The Railway Station especially, is one of the most photographed in the world. Treks on the Milford Track dubbed “the finest walk in the world”, Keplar Track, Hollyford Track and the Routeburn Track are legendary. Equally, Stewart Island, a short boat trip or flight from Invercargill presents some of best trekking opportunities in New Zealand.
