The idyllic sun-drenched Fiji islands are approximately 2000 kilometres north of New Zealand and as such are a popular holiday destination for New Zealanders. There are two main islands, Vanua Levu and Viti Levu where the Capital city Suva is located. Most flights, however, land at Nadi on Viti Levu’s western side. Just to make up the numbers, there at least another 320 islands in the Fiji group!
It is no surprise that there are so many resorts dotted around the sandy beach coastline, but for someone staying at one of the Fiji holiday homes & houses the options for exploration in Fiji are enormous with so many isolated little communities stretched around so many beautiful islands. In addition to lovely beaches, further inland are rushing mountain rivers and waterfalls in the depths of the rainforest.
The Fijian people are well known for their generous hospitality and any opportunity should be taken to sample some of the delicious Fijian fare such as Kokoda; raw fish marinated in lime and coconut juice. For drink there’s Kava; the potent liquor made the roots of this plant. The large Indian population, whose origin stems back to colonial times and sugar plantations, also produce some delicious curries.
Despite some recent political upheavals, village life continues unchanged and the slow and relaxed pace of life sits well with the tropical climate, the peaceful lagoons with their clear blue waters abundant with fish life and a restful stay at one of the Fiji holiday homes & houses.
