Niue holiday homes & houses differ from the other Pacific island destinations by virtue of the fact that Niue consists of just the one island, or precisely atoll, one of the largest in the world. It is approximately 2400 kilometres north-east of New Zealand and just east of Tonga.

The people of Niue enjoy dual citizenship as an independent nation in free association with New Zealand and for such an isolated island, English is remarkably widely spoken. Niue has always had to struggle in a world of economic independence due to its lack of significant natural resources, but despite the hardship, the people are kind and genuinely interested in meeting visitors.

The main township of Alofi has adequate services including rental cars, banking and telecommunications and while the range of supplies might not be as huge as a modern supermarket, there’s little chance of going hungry with a number of bakeries, bars, cafes and restaurants as well as nightclubs.

The takai festival is a fun time when each village parades around the island by whatever means possible. They cover the whole island and everyone is invited to join in. It’s one way of seeing the exciting rugged coastline where there are many reefs with small swimming coves to cool off in.

Early in 2004 Cyclone Heta caused considerable destruction around the island. After an Herculean effort much of the infrastructure has been rebuilt and Niue is operating again. Many people lost their homes and it is a reflection of the Niueans strength of determination that life begins now to return to normal.
