The two Samoa’s, Independent Samoa and American Samoa are approximately 3000 kilometres north-east of New Zealand and just north of Tonga. Independent Samoa differs from its eastern namesake in that it is a little less developed and a little less modern. But together they share a common culture centred around the extended family unit.
American Samoan life is based around the town of Pago Pago on the island of Tutuila where the American influence is clearly evident. The roads are well maintained and food and supplies are plentiful.
Independent Samoa, with its capital Apia located on Upolu island is less sophisticated but with a charm all of its own. Driving around the islands, you’ll come in contact with warm and friendly people and feel part of their lives. Traditional homes consist of fales, usually a roof built on posts with no walls, and extended family members all share in the facilities.
The southern coast has some of the most beautiful beaches and little day fales which you can rent for a meagre sum to relax in the shade after a swim or lying in the sun. Inland you’ll find some stunning waterfalls, rainforests, mountains and volcanoes. It’s easy to see why Robert Louis Stevenson so enjoyed the final years of his life here.
A day trip or longer is easily organised on nearby Savai’i island travelling by light plane or ferry. The pace of life, noticeably gentle as it is on Upolu, is positively glacial on the pristine island of Savai’i. You are also most welcome to attend church services in Samoa and experience the sweet sound of Samoans in song.
