Tahiti is the main island of this collection of 118 islands called French Polynesia which covers a vast area of ocean about the same size as Europe. It lies mid-ocean between Australia and South America. For years Tahiti has represented the tropical paradise myth for Europeans, encouraged by the lives of French artist Paul Gauguin and Belgian poet Jacques Brel who both lived out there final years here.

Pape’ete, the capital on Tahiti, is a busy city and as the main international airport is here, it is the hub for travel further to the outlying islands. The market on Sunday mornings is especially colourful and vibrant and a great place to pick up souvenirs. The mountains on Tahiti offer bush walks in beautiful valleys of fern trees dotted with waterfalls and grottoes.

It must be said that the other islands of French Polynesia are the ones that captivate the imagination with their beautiful atolls and lagoons, palm-fringed beaches and whispering winds. Nearby Bora Bora and Moorea have become a magnets for tourists with a number of international resorts and fine cuisine.

For those interested in travelling further afield, the Marquesas Islands are truly beautiful and a pilgrimage place for Gauguin and Brel fans where the two were buried. Although sometimes difficult to get to by plane, there are ships and yachts which call around the islands. It’s probably unnecessary to take your credit card though.

It’s often said that a stay in Tahiti can be expensive, but by taking advantage of Tahiti holiday homes & houses, a stay here need not break the bank.
