New Zealand Style Holiday CottagesNo doubt New Zealand cottages are similar to those elsewhere in the world, where the image conjured up by most people is of a picturesque building with cosy interiors, comfortable perhaps 'lived-in' furnishings, plenty of rugs, cushions and corners to curl up in and a welcoming hearth around which to toast marshmallows. Yes, in New Zealand they tend to be no different in that respect. However, whereas as in the UK can be built from stone and feature low ceilings and doors and small windows, there are plenty of charming cottages (and villas) in New Zealand built out of weatherboard or wood. This style of building has also been popular with colonial settlers in other parts of the world, when wood was one of the most abundant building materials to be found. Traditional New Zealand weatherboard or wooden cottages make for delightful homes – they are often built with large sundecks or a veranda at the front and back of the house allowing occupants to enjoy the sun throughout the day. They tend to have large windows, which let in lots of light and offer great views from the inside. Often cottages have beautiful wooden panelling on the interior walls, ceilings and floors and many of them still have either original fireplaces or wood and coal burning stoves. |
