Description

Waihou lodge was built in 2007 from Douglas fir logs sustainably grown in New Zealand's Kaingaroa forest. From conception we wanted the lodge to be a place that protects and enhances the surrounding natural environment, whilst providing an escape from the pollution, rush, and stress of everyday life.

All the interior timber, (there's a lot of it!) has been oiled and varnished using natural oils such as Eucalyptus and Citrus. As a result, the walls and ceiling 'breathes', so that the air inside is naturally cool and dry in summer, warm and dry in winter.
The lodge is situated in a private setting on a working sheep and cattle property, just a ten minute walk from the start of the Te Waihou walkway. This walkway follows the spring-fed upper reaches of the Waihou river for 4.7km, through farmland and native bush.
For fly or lure fishing enthusiasts, the gin-clear waters of this river are renowned for holding large numbers of elusive rainbow trout, which thrive in the pure cold water.
