Description
Okarito has about thirty year-around residents and is a quiet village known for its peaceful ambiance. Being off of the beaten track, Okarito is an ‘experience’ only for those who seek it. A very special place, with characteristics such as; its peaceful quality, the wild coastline, mountain views, lagoon, white herons and kiwi, and forest backdrops. They contrast and complement the glacial and commercial focus of Franz and Fox Glacier townships.
Restaurants, grocery, fuel etc. are available 20 minutes away in the township of Franz Josef Glacier. Okarito and the West Coast as a whole offers an unparalleled convergence of natural environments combined with a casual lifestyle.
Here the dense, native bush which typifies the West Coast abuts the towering, snow-covered Southern Alps whose presence dominates everything below. The Okarito Lagoon, located on the shores of the Tasman Sea is the largest unmodified wetland in New Zealand. The entire region surrounding Okarito is permanently protected by Westland National Park and Kiwi Sanctuary.
Cedar Cottage is purpose built as a holiday Bach. Local activities include coastal and bush walks, kayaking, fishing, whitebaiting, kiwi tours, and boat tours on Okarito Lagoon. In Franz Josef, flights, glacier walks and hotpools.

“Cedar Cottage was an absolutely delightful place to stay and I think I have found my own personal paradise in Okarito. The accomodation was lovely and welcoming, the fire warmed the place through beautifully. This is simply one of the most charming and welcoming places I have ever stayed and it truly felt like a home away from home.”

“Two nights but only one full day – And oh! What a day!
Three hours kayaking up the lagoon with Okarito Nature Tours – great guide – lots of birds, “bush” so different from Aussie bush. Then soaked our weary muscles at Glacier Hot Pools Aaaah! Worth the money – BIG cuppa coffee at Blue Ice Franz Josef. Regroup then trot up the Trig walk in time for sunset, clouds parted while we were there to reveal all the magnificent peaks! What an awesome creation – thanks to our wonderful creator. Just like this beautiful home away from home – lovely, carefully planned and such lovely colour coordination and thoughtfulness.
Well done and many thanks.
Rick, Sandra and Serena from OZ. “
