Description
Kotuku Lodge is a spacious 3 bedroom main floor of a lovely large house located just a minute from the beach and Tasman sea. (The upstairs suite is occasionally occupied by the owner, who may be doing some fishing- it is completely separate with private access). It is adjacent to Okarito Lagoon - New Zealand's largest unmodified wetland and home to many species of migratory and native birds - you can explore the waterways by boat (package prices available with accommodation) or freedom kayak rental. There are oustanding beach and forest walks including the "Trig" walk with views of Franz Josef Glacier and Mount Cook. You can even take a nocturnal trip with local guide to look for the Okarito Kiwi.
The village of Okarito is home to about 35 permanent residents and is a lovely retreat off the main road but within just 20 minutes of Franz Josef Glacier, it's many activities, new hot pools in the rainforest, and restaurants. Okarito is a stunning natural environment with beaches, rainforest and mountain views surrounding you. A beautiful place to spend the night, or to truly enjoy all this area has to offer, a few nights stay is recommended!

“Had a wonderful time. Boat trip was brilliant – saw so many birds. Went on kiwi tour and saw 1 pair and 1 single kiwi and heard more – brilliant. House was lovely and everyone so friendly. Thanks so much Paula & Swade. (Scotland)”

“When we decided to come to New Zealand there wa only one place I knew I wanted to visit: Okarito. I had read “The Bone People” and loved it and had an instinct that I should come here. I was right. We both (me and my husband) fell in love with Okarito. Thank you for making it possible for us to see the amazing lagoon and so early in the morning!! The cottage has been breat as well, we didn’t expet anything like it! This will definitely be the highlight of our trip. You made our honeymoon perfect. Thank you very much! (Finland)
Note from Paula: Samuli wanted to photograph the mountains and birds in early morning light so we arranged a 6:30 AM departure for a 2 hour tour on the lagoon – beautiful sunrise!”
